I live in a neighborhood that used to be controlled by a homeowner’s association that wouldn’t allow us to do much beyond trimming the trees surrounding our property. At some point, we collectively chose to ditch the association by voting against it because many of us didn’t enjoy having every little thing ruled over. I called for Nassau County tree service and tree-trimming employees came over the next day to really prune the trees out and even cut some of them down. For the first time in years, I had wonderful views of the mountains that surrounded our city after the trees were managed properly. It was nice to look out my windows and see a better view each day.
My parents came to the area that I’m now living in many years before I was born. Both of them had grown up in cities in another country that were surrounded by mountains. When they came to the US, they both thought this area looked a lot like where they had grown up. As I grew up, I really came to love the surrounding landscape myself. Every time that I travel and end up in a city where everything is completely flat or there are things like buildings that block the view, I feel out of sorts. It feels alien and even a little bit unnatural to me.
After cutting several trees down and gaining the ability to see the mountains that my parents loved so much, I’m now enjoying walking past the windows in my home and looking outside. I have even started going out on my back porch with a cup of tea to look into the distance each night after dinner. It is calming. I love trees, but there is a time for balance. Balance is what helps to beautify your surroundings and the stark architecture of the city can look more in harmony with nature.
